Anaerobic Bioremediation and Chemical Reduction

image24

Anaerobic bioremediation and chemical reduction technologies can be implemented using a large variety of low cost carbon, sulfur, and iron chemical supplements. JAG provides Treatability Testing, engineering design, and injection services for the following types of anaerobic bioremediation:

  • Emulsified Vegetable Oil (EVO)
  • Lactose and Sodium Lactate
  • Dairy Whey

We also design and implement injection projects using chemical reducing agents:

  • Zero-valent Iron (ZVI)
  • Ferrous Sulfate
  • Biogeochemical Reductive Dechlorination (BiRD)
  • EHC ISCR Reagent (ZVI and slow release carbon)
  • Calcium Polysulfide

A new service provided by JAG Consulting involves the BiRD process which utilizes various forms of organic material, sulfate, and iron which provides for growth of sulfate reducing bacteria which in turn facilitate the biogeochemical precipitation iron sulfide minerals. These iron sulfide minerals provide reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents such as PCE, TCE, and DCE.

Large quantities of iron sulfides (FeS) can be developed in a few months which will provide for a long term treatment of 2-3 years.  The formation of FeS does not inhibit or alter aquifer permeability.

Chemical reducing agents can be injected using injection wells, direct push injection, and open trenching. Treatment design can involve injection into specified area for source treatment or into a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) which allows for flow through treatment of the VOC contaminants. PRBs are often located along the down-gradient edge of a property to reduce the off-site migration of a contaminant plume.
